Working on some of the creature designs inspired by the head studies below. These were two variations on a scavenger type creature who is chewing on a giant piece of carrion in the story. The two general directions I was pursuing was reptile/dinosaur direction- versus more a scavenger bat of sorts.

This bat like creature is a bit awkward on the ground when it walks, its natural state is in flight.

Roughed in the basic silo to start below, and took it a little further.

After the initials for the poacher gang (See below)-doing next step explorations for the various members of the poacher gang. Here I am considering what i might want for the characters personality and overall tone, having that drive some of the choices, their stance, while still keeping some of the key elements from my initial sketch. Some initial thumbs for a character for my personal project. This character is a protective father of the main character. Here I am experimenting with a emphasizing certain aspects of the character-farmer-religious-pioneer.

These characters are some initial ideas for a gang of poachers. Obvious western inspiration here will be balanced with tech and original elements.

Cold War Assault

I been working on a piece set in the 1950's depicting a colossal air assault by the Soviet Union on American cities. Intercontinental assault capsules! Heres the pieces along with some thumbnails for the capsules-inspired by early russian spacecraft-but this time packed with russian assault troops! Here the crashed ship didnt separate from its booster- crashing into mainstreet- anywhere USA late 1950's.

Fantasy Gate Sketch-Below is the sketch for the island arch/gate sketch. For the color sketch I added attack boats pummeling the island with mortar fire. The latest sketch is on top.

Archive- GIJoe Cobra FANG Redesign

Being a big fan of 80's GI Joe, the famous toy line, one weekend I decided to have fun with a little exercise reenvisioning a classic yet somewhat unorthodox design-the Cobra F.A.N.G. The Fang is an acronym for (Fully Armed Negator Gyrocopter) pictured to the right in its original packaging back in 1983. If you like to take a full trip back check out this thorough video review here- http://youtu.be/FbGkLDTSeDs Cobra Command was an extremely well funded somewhat theatrical terrorist organization and the enemies of the GI Joe team-your Great American heroes.

My redesign is below. My backstory was that Cobra made the Fang from converted unmanned aerial vehicles they stole from the Russian Federation. I illustrated the original Russian design on top. In the middle is the somewhat impractical open cockpit that was an intermediate solution until a full cockpit was issued for the Crimson Guard- the red design on the bottom. The Crimson Guard are the elite red terrorists that are better than the normal blue terrorists...

I tried to maintain the overall feel of the original design, without changing it so much to lose the original feel. I had a great time changing up some of the forms and adding some fun details.

A while back I worked on an illustration for a personal project featuring

a giant lumbering Grazer (see my site).

I thought it might be cool that a priestess joined the creature during parts of its journey for some kind of religious pilgrimage, belted into the top of its head. I did some variations on her costume design, before I decided to drop the idea. Here is a small shot of the creature and the costume variations.

Wind Structure 01-Final Update

Finished sketch at least for now...for wind structures 01. I ended up making some composition changes, I removed small shuttle and wanted the large ship to feature prominently in the scene. Im not so happy with the communication of the wind theme here, and I will focus on communicating that better with the other sketches I plan on doing for the theme.

Experimenting with color scheme

With some initial thoughts sometimes i go to more sketches, but here I roughed in shapes in photoshop inspired by the intitial roughs- (see below)

When I work on little projects/practice at home, I like to do sketches/concepts in sets

with a common theme- so I have a design direction and motivation behind some of my decision making. I had the inspiration of thinking of a theme of structures having to deal with a powerful unidirectional wind- and how they might be designed to utilize, deflect or embrace the wind currents. As always my initial thoughts take the form of crappy scratches in sketchbook....
